Where Can You Swim With Your Dog in Spain?
Spain now has more than 100 beaches where dogs are allowed, giving pet owners far more choice for summer trips along the coast. The biggest concentrations are in the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Andalusia and Murcia, with additional options across northern Spain and the islands. Access is not uniform, however, and many beaches still restrict dogs during peak season or apply their own local rules.
Where Dog-Friendly Beaches Are Concentrated
- Valencian Community: Agua Amarga, Caleta dels Gossets, Punta del Riu and Pinedo
- Catalonia: La Rubina, Rec del Molí and Els Griells
- Andalusia: Designated areas in Málaga, Almería and Cádiz provinces
- Murcia: Several beaches with specific pet zones
- Other regions: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands
- Access: Some beaches allow dogs year-round; others only during certain months or hours
Rules vary considerably between municipalities, so a beach that accepts dogs in spring may still ban them during the main summer season. Some councils require pets to remain under close control, while others may ask owners to carry valid health documentation or observe restricted access times. Checking the latest municipal regulations before setting out is important, particularly in popular resort areas where enforcement can be stricter in July and August.
The growing number of designated areas makes several well-known coastal destinations easier to visit with a dog. Alicante, Santa Pola, El Campello and Valencia all have recognised options, while Catalonia combines dog-friendly beaches with resorts such as L’Escala and L’Estartit. Similar choices in Málaga, Cádiz, the Balearics and the Canary Islands give pet owners alternatives across both mainland Spain and the islands.
Beach days with a dog still need some planning in Spain’s summer heat. Owners should avoid the hottest part of the day, bring enough drinking water and look for shade, while hot sand can damage paw pads. Waste must be collected and other beach users respected. Before booking accommodation around a particular beach, it is worth confirming that the local dog rules apply during the exact dates of the trip.
