Passengers traveling through the Molise region should prepare for service interruptions on the Venafro to Roccaravindola railway line this summer. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, part of Italy’s state rail group, will carry out important upgrades to the electric traction systems as part of a nationwide effort to modernize regional railways. While these works are intended to improve train reliability and reduce maintenance delays in the long run, travelers on this route should expect temporary disruptions to regional and interregional services for now.

The works are scheduled for three weekends in 2025:

  • August 9 and 10
  • August 23 and 24
  • September 6 and 7

This initiative includes two primary phases: updating the Roccaravindola-Venafro line, expected to finish by June 2026, and improving the Venafro rail connection and electrical infrastructure. Rail services will be suspended or limited during these weekends, with replacement buses in operation, which may result in longer travel times and changes to the usual schedules.

Several lesser-known Molise destinations may become harder to access during this time. The Cipresseta di Fontegreca is a protected cypress forest known for its shaded walking paths and cool springs, a favored spot for summer visitors. The Santuario dell’Addolorata di Castelpetroso is a notable mountain pilgrimage church with striking neo-Gothic architecture set in a remote area. Also impacted may be access to the Mainarde hiking trails in the Apennines, prized for panoramic views and local wildlife, usually reached via regional rail connections.

Other outdoor and historical sites relying on regional transport may also see reduced accessibility. Lago di Castel San Vincenzo, an artificial lake favored for kayaking and picnics, can be reached by train followed by local transportation. The archaeological site at Pietrabbondante includes a well-preserved Samnite stone theater, known as the Theater of Pietrabbondante, that draws history lovers, though it is located far from main roads. The forested cycling and hiking paths at Colle dell’Orso near Frosolone might face limited access because of potential train service interruptions.

Travelers planning to pass through Molise on the affected weekends are advised to follow official rail announcements and review timetables ahead of time. Choosing different travel dates or routes may help reduce the risk of disruptions or cancellations. Though these improvements might cause some short-term delays, they are vital for making rail services in the region more reliable and efficient in the future.
