Essential engineering work will temporarily shut down rail services along the Ebbw Vale line at the end of April. Beginning at midnight on Sunday, 27 April, trains between Cardiff Central, Newport, and Ebbw Vale Town will be suspended. During this period, replacement bus services will operate until Friday morning, 2 May, when train operations are scheduled to resume. The closure allows multiple repair and safety tasks to be completed in one coordinated effort.

Network Rail crews will focus on renewing infrastructure near Crosskeys station. Clearing overgrown shrubs and bushes will also be part of the work to keep level crossings visible. Drainage systems alongside the track will be cleaned and repaired to prevent flooding, and parts of the track will be lubricated and tested for safety. By combining these activities, the rail operator aims to reduce long-term disruption for both passengers and nearby residents.

We are working really hard to improve train service punctuality and this essential work is a part of our commitment to do that.
Nick Millington, Network Rail Wales and Borders route director

Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead, as journey times will likely be extended due to the replacement bus schedule. Visitors heading to or from Ebbw Vale, including those planning spring trips into rural Monmouthshire or the Brecon Beacons area, should expect adjusted connections. Delays may be more noticeable during peak hours, especially on days when events or tourism traffic adds pressure to public transport routes.

Although temporarily inconvenient, the planned upgrades are intended to deliver tangible improvements for rail users. Improved drainage and better visibility reduce the risk of delays caused by water damage or vegetation interference. Travelers will benefit from more reliable service once the line reopens, especially those who rely on the route for daily commutes or weekend getaways across South Wales.

For regular passengers, this closure reinforces a broader message: railway infrastructure requires consistent attention. While temporary bus services may be less convenient, they enable longer-term improvements to speed, safety, and scheduling. Once work is complete, tourists and local travelers alike may notice more efficient and dependable rail journeys along this important route.
