In Cambodia, within the renowned Angkor Wat temple grounds, visitors have started recreating moments from the well-known smartphone game 'Temple Run.' This phenomenon has grown in fame thanks to TikTok videos, where travelers dash through the historical ruins, imitating digital avatars. Nonetheless, such actions have sparked worries among scholars and experts in cultural heritage preservation.

The ancient Angkor Wat complex, over 900 years old, is not only an architectural marvel but also a sacred site for locals. Experts worry about the risk of damaging these historical structures as tourists recklessly run and jump through the ruins. Local researcher Andy Brouwer expressed his surprise that temple authorities are not taking stricter measures to prevent such actions, calling the situation a "disaster waiting to happen."

Different Perspectives

Despite these concerns, some Cambodians welcome the attention this new trend brings to their country. Comments on popular videos include expressions of gratitude, such as "thank you for promoting Cambodia." Nonetheless, questions remain about the need for stricter oversight by authorities to preserve cultural heritage for future generations.

Risks and Ethics

Experts warn that such forms of entertainment at historical sites could lead not only to physical damage but also to a loss of the cultural significance of these places. It is essential for tourists to be mindful of their behavior in sacred and historically significant locations, respecting the traditions and regulations set by local communities and heritage conservation authorities.
