Rail Disruptions in Northern Italy May Hinder Access to Scenic Nature Spots This July
From July 23 to 27, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana will carry out planned maintenance and infrastructure upgrades on two important rail routes in northern Italy: the Novara Arona and Novara Domodossola lines. The work includes replacing a structural crossing over the Roggia Olengo stream between Novara and Vignale and continuing construction near the Cressa Fontaneto station to modernize track facilities. The infrastructure upgrades that are near Cressa Fontaneto involve the action of extending the station’s crossing loop so that it can accommodate 750 meter long freight trains.
These trains meet European standards in terms of weight along with size. Over a course of time, they are expected to go on to improve all logistical operations. However, during the works, travelers may experience the following items:
- Schedule changes
- Delays in service
- Partial route suspensions
The railway adjustments could make it temporarily more difficult for travelers to reach popular countryside locations that rely on these regional train services. One such place is Lago di Mergozzo, known for its peaceful shores and clear waters located just off the Domodossola route. Parco Naturale dei Lagoni di Mercurago, a nature reserve near Arona is another site likely to be less accessible during the works. Travelers hoping to explore Alpe Devero may experience travel complications due to changes in train connectivity during the upgrade period.
Other nature based destinations could also be impacted by the reduced frequency of regional trains. The Oasi Naturalistica della Bessa, a historic nature park ideal for walking and birdwatching may see fewer day trippers if train services are interrupted. Monte Fenera Nature Park with its forested paths and archaeological sites is also located in a zone served by affected rail lines. Additionally the popular Lake Orta’s Sacro Monte trail, a UNESCO site offering views and spiritual walks, may be harder to reach without consistent rail service in nearby towns.
These infrastructure works reflect long term efforts for modernizing Italy’s railways and, in the short term, they may obstruct travelers who rely on public transportation for reaching rewarding, lesser known destinations. Visitors should plan ahead and should also watch railway updates. Visitors should be considering alternative options for transport in situations where it may be necessary. Enhancements are intended for improving network capacity with reliability in the long run though some temporary inconvenience is expected.
