Ithaca could see a noticeable rise in international visitors after Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey brings new attention to the small Greek island associated with Homer’s Odysseus. Local officials say the effect is only starting to appear and expect stronger demand next year as the film reaches more audiences worldwide. Businesses on the island are already hearing visitors discuss the movie and its connection with Ithaca.

Why Ithaca Could Attract More Visitors

  • Location: Ionian Sea, off western mainland Greece
  • Expected impact: Stronger tourism demand during the 2027 season
  • Main interest: Ithaca’s long association with Homer, Odysseus and The Odyssey
  • Quieter months that may benefit: March, April, October and possibly November
  • Cultural stop: Light on Homeric Ithaca exhibition in Stavros, displaying archaeological finds linked with the island’s Homeric past

Mayor Dionysis Stanitsas says there has not yet been a major increase linked directly to the film, but expects visitors to start planning trips as its international release expands. Some local businesses believe the effect has already begun, with tourists mentioning the production and Ithaca receiving more global attention. Shop owners say mythology has long been one of the island’s main draws, even before Nolan’s adaptation arrived.

Greater interest could encourage visitors to look beyond Ithaca’s beaches and coves and explore places tied more closely to its literary history. Stavros is one of the clearest examples, where the permanent Light on Homeric Ithaca exhibition presents archaeological material connected with the island’s identification as Odysseus’ homeland. A wider tourism season could also make spring and autumn visits more attractive, when the island is normally much quieter.

Ithaca’s tourism story will depend less on film fans arriving for a single summer and more on whether interest spreads into the quieter months. Local archaeologists and businesses expect March, April, October and even November to benefit if demand holds. That would give the island a broader season while keeping its strongest draw unchanged: the Homeric history that was attracting visitors long before the film.
