In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Western sanctions have severely impacted various sectors, with the airline industry facing particularly acute challenges. Russian airlines have been cut off from accessing critical aircraft parts from U.S. and European suppliers, leading to significant operational hurdles. As a result, some carriers have resorted to unorthodox methods to maintain their fleets.

Shortly after the sanctions took effect, the predicament for airlines like Aeroflot became dire. The national carrier lost valuable landing slots at London Heathrow and struggled with invalidated leasing contracts, severely affecting its operations. Compounded by the restricted flight destinations primarily to nearby nations and parts of the Middle East, Russian airlines saw their fleets and their operational capabilities diminish rapidly.

The scarcity of spare parts forced airlines to cannibalize some of their own planes to keep others flying. This drastic measure led to halved fleets but was deemed necessary under the circumstances. Additionally, these carriers found themselves turning to the black market to procure parts that often lacked proper documentation, further complicating safety and compliance issues. Reports indicate that flight safety incidents more than doubled between 2022 and 2023 as the availability of legitimate parts dwindled.

In a remarkable twist, Russian travelers have begun to play a pivotal role in keeping the airlines operational by transporting aircraft parts in their checked luggage. A notable incident at a Moscow airport involved the discovery of a $40,000 aircraft part in a passenger's luggage destined for S7 Airlines, a former member of the oneworld alliance. This incident was not isolated, with several similar cases emerging throughout the year.

Despite the ongoing challenges, there was a curious attempt by a Russian aircraft manufacturer to court American Airlines as a potential customer for a new narrowbody aircraft, highlighting the desperate measures being taken to sustain the aviation industry under sanctions. As the situation develops, the creativity and resilience of Russian airlines continue to be tested as they navigate these unprecedented hurdles.
