Travel between Guildford and Reigate will be affected as trains are substituted with buses from Sunday 14 September through Saturday 27 September. These temporary changes affect the North Downs Line, a route commonly used by commuters and visitors traveling to Gatwick Airport or exploring the Surrey countryside. Passengers are encouraged to check timetables ahead of time and allow extra travel time, especially those planning visits to harder-to-reach locations.

The works include modernizing key sections of the line to improve safety and reliability for travelers. Key elements of the upgrade include:

  • Installation of 16 new signalling systems between Shalford and Gomshall.
  • Upgrades to four level crossings: Chilworth, Tangley, Brook, and Burrows Lane.
  • Advanced systems such as radar detection and CCTV monitoring will be used to manage traffic safely.
  • Integration of all systems with the Guildford Area Signalling Centre to streamline operations.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience facing passengers who use the North Downs Line between Guildford, Reigate and Gatwick Airport. The signalling upgrade is vital for safety, reliability, and future capacity, enabling more connections to Gatwick. Passengers travelling from London and east Surrey can still use the Brighton Main Line to reach the airport."
Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex route director

Travelers visiting more remote destinations along the North Downs Line may face additional challenges during this period. Sites such as St Martha’s Hill, a popular walking spot with panoramic views, the silent paths around Box Hill, and the secluded Shere Heath nature reserve will be harder to reach due to bus replacement services and temporary road closures. Visitors planning hikes, nature walks, or countryside exploration should allow extra time and check alternative transport options to reach these locations.

Travelers heading to less frequently visited sites might experience delays. Destinations such as Reigate Heath ponds tucked away in quiet areas, the ancient woodlands of Albury Park, and the serene trails near Newlands Corner could be harder to reach. Bus services will replace trains along this section, and temporary closures at level crossings may add extra travel time. Travelers intending to visit these spots are advised to review transport options in advance and factor in extra time for their trip.

While the short-term disruption will affect access to these destinations, the long-term improvements promise safer and more reliable travel along the North Downs Line. Improvements to the signalling systems and crossings are expected to make train journeys smoother and may increase the frequency of services linking Guildford with Gatwick Airport. After the works are finished, travel along the line should become more reliable and secure for both daily travelers and those visiting for leisure.
