Finnair Launches Passenger Weighing Initiative at Helsinki Airport

In May, travelers departing from Helsinki Airport are invited to participate in a novel survey where Finnair is collecting data on the average weight of passengers and their carry-on luggage. This initiative, part of a larger project to enhance aircraft balance calculations, offers volunteers a chance to contribute to the safety and efficiency of future flights.

This voluntary and anonymous survey was initially launched in February and saw participation from 1,500 volunteers. During the current phase in May, passengers volunteering at the departure gate will be weighed along with their carry-on items. The aim is to refine the data Finnair uses for its crucial aircraft balance calculations.

Finnair has consistently utilized average weights derived from past measurements for these calculations, as required by the Civil Aviation Authority. These measurements, last updated in 2017 and 2018, are due for a refresh to ensure continued compliance and accuracy. The data collected will be forwarded to Traficom, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, and will influence balance and loading calculations for flights from 2025 to 2030.

Satu Munnukka, Head of Ground Processes at Finnair, emphasizes the security and confidentiality of the process, stating that no personal data linking the weights to individual passengers is retained. Instead, the focus is solely on gathering statistical data to aid in maintaining optimal flight conditions.

The project covers selected flights within the European Schengen area and several long-haul flights from the non-Schengen sections of Helsinki Airport. With its emphasis on passenger privacy and contribution to flight safety, Finnair's initiative reflects a proactive approach to airline operations, paving the way for more precise and efficient aviation standards.
