Finland and Sweden Reconnect by Train After 38 Years
Finland and Sweden are connected by passenger rail again after a break of 38 years. Finnish operator VR has launched a direct service between Oulu and Haparanda, restoring cross-border trains via Tornio and giving northern Finland a rail link into Sweden. The first service left Oulu on 10 August, with crowds greeting the train in Haparanda after it crossed the Torne River into Sweden.

Passengers heading farther into Sweden will still need to change trains at Haparanda. The reason is technical: Finland uses a wider 1,524 mm track gauge, while Sweden follows the European standard. These differences were one of the reasons cross-border passenger services disappeared around the late 1980s and early 1990s. The new route restores the connection, but the change of train at Haparanda remains necessary for onward journeys.
The route opens up easier rail trips between northern Finland and destinations such as Luleå, with onward connections towards Stockholm and the rest of Scandinavia. It also makes longer European train journeys more realistic, including trips between Finnish Lapland and southern Europe. Oulu, Tornio and Haparanda can now be combined more easily with Swedish Lapland without relying entirely on flights, ferries or long-distance coaches.
The new service makes longer rail journeys across the Nordic region easier to organise, even though a change at Haparanda is still required. Connection times will therefore be important for anyone continuing south into Sweden. VR says links towards Luleå are expected to improve in December, which should give passengers more practical options when planning trips between northern Finland, Sweden and destinations farther south.
