South African Airways (SAA) is revising its flight schedule to accommodate the rising number of travelers during the festive season. Starting October 6, 2025, flights between Johannesburg and Lagos will run six times a week, with new departures added on Mondays and Tuesdays. Flights to Accra will be boosted to six weekly services starting October 1, with extra departures on Wednesdays and Fridays. These changes reflect strategic planning aimed at meeting passenger growth without permanently increasing the capacity of the airline's regional network.

From December 10, 2025, to February 11, 2026, Johannesburg–São Paulo flights will temporarily rise to four weekly services, including extra departures on Wednesdays and Sundays. This timeframe occurs during Brazil’s peak summer travel season and sees a noticeable increase in international holiday travelers. Airlines frequently adjust their schedules seasonally to match short-term surges in passenger demand, without making permanent changes to their operations.

“South African Airways is strengthening its network with more flights, more frequencies, and more opportunities to connect Africa to the world. We are aiming higher to serve our customers better this festive season."
Mr Tebogo Tsimane, SAA’s Chief Commercial Officer

Adding more flights gives travelers greater flexibility when planning holiday trips. By spreading travelers across extra flights, airlines reduce the chance of overbooking and ensure a more seamless and reliable travel experience. The extra São Paulo flights enhance direct links between southern Africa and South America, allowing passengers to skip European layovers and reach their destinations faster and more comfortably. These changes reflect a broader shift in airline scheduling, with airlines adjusting to changing travel habits and regional demands.

Increasing flight availability during peak travel times can reduce pressure on airport operations and provide passengers with a smoother and more pleasant travel experience. By spreading passengers over additional flights, airlines reduce overbooking risks and provide a more seamless, dependable travel experience. These adjustments also allow airlines to make the most of their aircraft when flights are most profitable. Adjusting flight frequencies according to the season continues to be a key strategy for airlines, enabling them to meet passenger demand efficiently while keeping operations smooth.

The adjustments in SAA’s network show how African airlines are adapting to worldwide travel patterns. Airlines are increasingly tailoring flight schedules to reflect seasonal spikes, cultural events, and regional tourism flows rather than relying solely on static schedules. This provides travelers with easier access to destinations and a wider range of options during peak travel periods. Travelers planning trips during this period are advised to book in advance, since popular flights could still sell out quickly even with the temporary increase in available services.
