Latvia announces digital queue for crossing the eastern border

Latvia is working to create an electronic queue at its eastern border. This will allow drivers to register in advance and avoid long traffic jams.

The statement was made by Finance Minister Arvils Ašeradens. According to him, drivers currently spend two to three days in kilometre-long queues at the border.

"We are now working to introduce an electronic queue at the border. In other words, drivers will know when they need to go to the border by registering in advance in the computer system," the minister said.

By the way, one of the reasons for such inconveniences is the control over sanctions exercised by border guards.

"If we look at the statistics, 70% of all inspections - a really huge number - are inspections of goods subject to sanctions," said Raimonds Zukuls, director of the Customs Department of the State Revenue Service.

In particular, amendments have recently come into force restricting the cargo of semi-trailers and trailers registered in Russia. In just a few days, 13 cases of such violations were detected.

"The amendments also restrict the movement of certain goods in transit through Russia, goods destined for Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan say. And, of course, this sanctions regime affects the overall flow," Zukuls added.
