A new exhibition train will soon embark on a nationwide tour as part of the Railway 200 celebrations, marking two centuries of modern rail transport. Launching on 27 June at the Severn Valley Railway in Worcestershire, the train will visit 60 destinations across Britain over the next year. Developed in collaboration with the National Railway Museum, this mobile exhibition will present railway history, technological advancements, and the future of the industry to a broad audience.

Unlike stationary railway exhibits, this initiative brings historical and educational content directly to major stations and heritage railways. The train, consisting of repurposed Mark 3 coaches, includes interactive displays such as Railway Firsts, which highlights key innovations, and Wonderlab on Wheels, allowing visitors to engage with engineering concepts. Another section, Your Railway Future, explores career paths within the industry, while a designated area will host various industry exhibits. Admission to the train is free, though standard site entry fees may still apply.

For travelers, this exhibition offers an opportunity to learn about the role of rail transport in shaping regional and national connectivity. The exhibition’s presence at key transport hubs will provide insights into how railway infrastructure has evolved and its continuing impact on mobility. The event also aligns with ongoing discussions on the role of rail in sustainable and efficient transportation.

This traveling exhibit also enhances the experience of those navigating Britain’s rail network by turning stations into spaces for learning and cultural engagement. Visitors across urban and rural locations will gain access to historical perspectives without the need to visit a museum. The itinerary includes stops at sites with historical railway significance, making it an informative addition for those traveling across the country. A planned virtual tour will ensure wider accessibility for those unable to visit in person.

Combining railway history and current travel, the exhibition shows the importance of rail transport today. It underlines the importance of the railway to tourism and daily mobility, in the context of current infrastructure. This initiative will offer many a fresh look at rail travel and what the future of transport has in store.
