Smart 3D scanners to be installed at Malta airport: it will ease the fate of tourists

Starting from 2024, the Valletta International Airport in Malta will no longer have to remove electronics from hand luggage at security checks.

In addition, liquids with a volume of more than 100 millilitres will be allowed on board, Times Malta reports.

Smart 3D scanners will be installed in the control area, which will be able to "see" the contents of bags in greater detail. Therefore, checks will be faster. Similar technologies are already being tested in Helsinki, and in 2024 they will be launched at airports in Spain and Copenhagen.

The new scanners use computed tomography technology to create a 3D image of the contents of a bag, giving the security officer a clearer view of what is inside the bag and the ability to rotate the image for a more detailed inspection.

Currently, passengers are required to remove items such as laptops, tablets and liquids from their carry-on luggage during security screening.
