The UN Tourism organization has teamed up with easyJet holidays to launch a groundbreaking Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework for the tourism industry. As global tourism rebounds to 96% of pre-pandemic levels, this new initiative is crucial for measuring and reporting the sustainability practices of tourism businesses. The ESG framework will offer clear metrics for assessing the environmental and social impact of companies operating in the sector, aiming to create a unified standard across the industry.

In partnership with Oxford University, UN Tourism has been developing this framework to address the current lack of consistent sustainability reporting. easyJet holidays has played a central role in advancing this project by supporting research and participating in pilot programs that test the framework’s practicality. This collaboration is expected to drive forward a structured approach to sustainability within tourism.

Several major tourism companies have already embraced the principles of this new framework. Airlines, hotels, and tour operators are among the key stakeholders participating in the pilot programs, contributing to refining the system. The goal is to establish a widely accepted standard that aligns with the global sustainability goals set by the UN, ensuring that tourism businesses are held accountable for their environmental and social impact.

These companies are also actively involved in promoting awareness of the ESG framework and educating their customers about sustainable tourism practices. This public-private collaboration is crucial in ensuring that the framework is both practical for businesses and understandable for travelers who want to make informed choices about their trips.

For travelers, this news means they will soon have access to clearer information about the sustainability efforts of tourism companies. With this data, they can choose operators that prioritize environmental preservation and social responsibility, allowing them to travel with a positive impact. The framework will also push businesses to offer more sustainable options, ultimately benefiting both travelers and the destinations they visit.

As tourism continues to grow, the development of this ESG framework marks a significant step towards responsible travel. Travelers can expect a shift towards more eco-conscious experiences, with businesses committed to protecting the environment and supporting local communities.
