Hamilton West Station Platform to Undergo Major Rebuild This Summer
Hamilton West’s Platform 2 will undergo a full rebuild next year, with £2.1 million earmarked by Network Rail to modernise the busy South Lanarkshire station. The works are scheduled to begin on 18 May 2025 and will continue until 29 August, requiring the platform to close for the entire 15-week period. Plans for the upgrade include resurfacing the platform, improving drainage, and adding tactile paving to make it safer and more accessible for all passengers.
During construction, eastbound services heading toward Motherwell and Larkhall will not stop at Hamilton West. Travelers using these routes are encouraged to switch to nearby Hamilton Central station. At the same time, westbound services heading to Glasgow will run as usual without any changes to the timetable. A portion of the station’s car park will also close temporarily, with alternative parking provided at Well Hall Road Car Park to support affected passengers.
The disruption is likely to impact both regular commuters and holiday travelers, especially those using eastbound services in the area. While the disruptions may cause minor inconveniences, passengers can prepare in advance by adjusting their schedules or choosing alternate connections. Travel advice will be available throughout the project to help people manage their journeys with minimal stress.
Despite the short-term challenges, the upgrade is set to bring lasting improvements for passengers. Upgrades to the platform include a sturdier surface for high-traffic and rainy days, along with tactile paving to assist those with visual impairments. By improving ease of movement and overall comfort, the upgrades are meant to better serve the day-to-day experience of today’s rail users.
While there will be some short-term changes to journeys, we're working closely with Network Rail to keep disruption to a minimum and make sure customers can continue to travel with confidence.
The project forms part of broader work aimed at strengthening the safety and reliability of Scotland’s railway system. While some service interruptions are anticipated, the renewal of Platform 2 is a proactive step aimed at keeping the station aligned with modern travel demands. Passengers scheduled to travel during this time should monitor updates on train schedules and explore alternative routes to minimize inconvenience.
