Brussels Airport has warned that a significant number of flights will be cancelled on 12 May as Belgium prepares for a national strike. The disruption is linked to planned industrial action by the country’s three main trade unions. Airport authorities said reduced staffing among key service providers will affect operations, with both departing and some arriving flights expected to be impacted.

In a notice published on its website, the airport acknowledged the inconvenience and confirmed that affected passengers will be contacted with alternative options. Reports indicate that up to half of all scheduled flights on the day could be cancelled. The airport added that it is working with airlines and partners to keep as many services running as possible under the circumstances.

The strike is tied to ongoing disputes over retirement rules, particularly for pilots. Trade unions ACV, ABVV and ACLVB have raised concerns about current legislation requiring pilots to remain in the workforce until 66, while European aviation rules limit their ability to operate flights beyond certain ages. The issue has led to growing tensions between unions and the government.

What May Be Disrupted on 12 May

  • departing flights at Brussels Airport
  • selected arriving flights
  • rail services operated by SNCB
  • De Lijn buses and trams to and from the airport

Public transport links are also expected to face disruption, which may make it harder to reach the airport on the day of the strike. This could affect connections across Belgium, particularly for passengers relying on trains or local transport to complete their journey.

“That is why I will examine how and to what extent the federal government can provide support to conduct this debate within the European Union, with a view to a possible increase to 67 years of age. Because it is important to emphasise that this is a European power."
Jan Jambon, The Office of Pensions Minister

The situation highlights how industrial disputes can quickly affect travel plans, even when the issue is not directly linked to passengers. A single day of strike action can lead to widespread cancellations and reduced connectivity. Anyone travelling on 12 May may need to allow extra time, check updates frequently and prepare for last-minute schedule changes.
