Between July 8 and July 17, 2025, rail traffic between Caserta and Cancello stations will be interrupted to allow for significant upgrade works. These works are part of the continuous efforts to develop the Naples-Bari high-speed and high-capacity rail corridor. Specifically, the upgrades target the Cancello-Frasso Telesino stretch to be operational by mid to late 2025, seeking to boost travel efficiency on this vital route.

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), under the FS Italiane Group, will carry out the project by concentrating on the following main points:

  • Mobilizing an average of 75 skilled technicians and workers daily,
  • Investing approximately 400 million euros overall,
  • Targeting increased line capacity, faster train speeds, and better passenger service quality.

Travelers should anticipate limited rail access to several notable landmarks during the suspension. Among these are the Royal Palace’s extensive gardens in Caserta, which are renowned for their fountains and parkland. Access to the archaeological site of the Roman Amphitheater in Santa Maria Capua Vetere will be affected as well. The medieval San Leucio silk factory complex, recognized for its pioneering industrial history, might be less accessible by train while the upgrades take place.

Other destinations potentially impacted include the scenic Valle di Maddaloni, known for its hiking trails and natural beauty. The historic San Michele Arcangelo Sanctuary, perched on a hilltop near Cancello, is another affected site. Visitors may also find it more difficult to access the beautiful Cascata di Limatola waterfall, a natural attraction favored by many. The temporary suspension will require travelers to consider alternative transportation options to visit these places.

Although the interruption will cause short-term inconvenience, the upgrades will bring long-term benefits. The enhanced infrastructure will reduce travel times and increase service frequency between Naples and Bari, improving connectivity across southern Italy. After completion, the improvements will offer travelers more efficient trips and expanded access to local cultural and natural landmarks.
