The Department of Conservation of New Zealand has announced an increase in prices for popular routes
The Department of Conservation (DoC) has announced an 18 percent price increase for the popular Great Walks hiking trails. The price increase will take effect on July 1.
The price increase applies to the cost of staying in huts and campsites along Great Walks routes. According to News Hub, the exception will be the Paparoa Trail on the West Coast, where prices will increase by 6%.
Kat Wilson, the DoC's director of heritage and visitors, explained the price hike as a result of a significant increase in the cost of maintaining popular routes.
"Although Great Walks fees do not cover all costs, the money raised helps to maintain, repair, and improve huts, campsites, trails, and facilities, and balances the costs between users and taxpayers," she said in a statement.
The last time prices were revised was in 2019/20. Since then, hikers have been able to enjoy the Great Walks trails at the same price.
"The Great Walks experience remains affordable, with options ranging from $19 for camping in Abel Tasman to $92 for a hut on the Milford Trail during peak season for New Zealand residents. Fees for international visitors remain at a 50 percent premium to those for New Zealand residents on most Great Walks routes," the statement said.
Great Walks are trails that traverse forests, lakes, and rivers to rugged mountain peaks, deep gorges, and endless valleys. Tourists visit the area every year to feel at one with nature.
As TravelWise previously reported, New Zealand is worried about the spread of the wallaby population.
