China reports record number of train passengers as Spring Festival rush begins
China's rail network made 81.55 million trips between January 26 and February 1, 2024, the first week of the Spring Festival travel rush, industry data show.
This resulted in approximately 11.65 million rail trips daily during the last week, according to China Railway, Shine writes.
China Railway estimates that a total of 480 million rail trips are expected to be made during this year's Spring Festival rush, up 37.9% from 2023.
The surge in travel, also known as "chunyun," which began on January 26 and will end on March 5, will see hundreds of millions of people return home to reunite with their families.
The Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year according to the lunar calendar, fell on February 10 this year. The festival holiday this year lasted from February 10 to 17, one day longer than in previous years.
As TravelWise wrote, according to the China State Railway Group, the new railroad between China and Laos has shown excellent performance. This 1035-kilometer-long route connects Kunming with Vientiane.
