Bus Operators Enhance Travel Experience for All

Swindon's Bus Company and Stagecoach West, subsidiaries of Go-Ahead Group, have launched an initiative to make bus travel more accessible for individuals with learning disabilities and autism. This effort, organized in partnership with Swindon Borough Council and Experts by Experience from the Learning Disability Partnership, aims to simplify the boarding process and improve overall travel experiences.
At a recent event, representatives from both bus companies engaged directly with community members to gather feedback and insights. This initiative underscores the importance of inclusive travel, ensuring that public transportation is a viable option for everyone. "Buses and other public transport are vital for daily life, enabling us to commute to work, school, healthcare appointments, and social events," stated Andrew Sherrington, General Manager of Swindon's Bus Company.
Sherrington highlighted the need for confidence in travel among people with disabilities. The event provided an opportunity for attendees to familiarize themselves with the bus boarding process, aiming to boost their confidence in using public transport.
Cllr Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, emphasized the significance of accessible public transport services. He praised the initiative for connecting Experts by Experience with bus operators, allowing them to directly communicate their challenges and suggestions.
Swindon Borough Council is committed to creating a more inclusive travel environment. They encourage community engagement with bus companies through the Get Swindon Moving Community Group, available on the council’s website.
By fostering open communication and understanding, Swindon aims to enhance the travel experience for all residents, ensuring that public transport is a welcoming and reliable option for everyone.
