Brits traveling to Spain via Gibraltar should be aware of a little-known rule that has seen some refused entry
Previously, anyone could travel from Gibraltar to Spain with just a valid passport. But now, additional documents are required because, while Britons can stay up to 90 days without a visa in Spain, which is part of the Schengen area, they will need more documents if they are entering from outside the area, such as from Gibraltar.
The UK government states that travelers may need to show a valid return or onward ticket when traveling to Spain, as well as: proof that you have enough money for your stay; proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay, such as a hotel booking confirmation; proof of address if you are visiting your own accommodation (e.g. a second home); an invitation or proof of address if you are staying with a third party, friend or family. An invitation filled out by your hosts is one of the options," the Teesside Live website writes.
Ed Bayard, who was in Gibraltar when he planned to stop by Spain for dinner, was among those turned away at the border. He wrote on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter: "Deleted *this* post because people mistakenly assumed I didn't have the correct documents. I/we did. The problem was (and at the time of writing this article still is) the lack of published guidelines (MFA or otherwise) for short-term visits, which were not a problem a month ago. While you certainly need a passport, until a few weeks ago you didn't need any proof of return travel or accommodation. We had both and presented them. We're not the only ones affected - people going to Gib, going to Spain for golf, etc. are unable to get into the country," Wales Online reports. "After talking to a friend in Gib a few minutes ago, he said that *sometimes* border guards accept restaurant reservations as proof and let you in! So, as we suspected, it's completely arbitrary."
