Getting sick while on vacation is a nightmare for many tourists eagerly anticipating their holiday. Instead of relaxing and exploring new destinations, travelers, including those from the UK, find themselves confined to their rooms or hospitals, wasting time and enduring pain, nausea, fever, or other symptoms.

While tourist areas typically have access to doctors, pharmacies, and hospitals, obtaining quality treatment during a vacation can be more challenging in some countries compared to others. Express.co.uk interviewed Eva Ruuska, Operations Manager at Riskline, to identify the countries where tourists are most vulnerable.

This vulnerability may not necessarily correlate with the standard of medical care in a given country. The issue often revolves around access to well-equipped hospitals, cost factors, and other considerations.

"Contracting an illness while on vacation is relatively common. Some of the worst destinations for falling ill abroad include Egypt, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, India, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba due to limited access to emergency care in case a traveler requires medical attention," explained the travel expert.

She clarified that adequate medical care can be found in some of the mentioned countries, such as Egypt and Mexico. However, the likelihood of severe cases being effectively treated outside major cities is significantly lower.

Eva Ruuska stated, "Facilities located away from major cities and tourist hubs may provide only basic amenities, lack necessary equipment and medications, and might necessitate evacuation or transfer to a better-equipped facility."

In case of feeling unwell, it's advisable to contact the tour operator, and after receiving treatment, it's recommended to review the medical bill for any overcharges. Additionally, it's helpful to avoid consuming exotic foods, untreated water, and interacting closely with visibly ill individuals.
