A Joint Approach to Nature Conservation in Travel and Tourism
The collaboration between the World Travel & Tourism Council, the United Nations World Tourism Organization, and the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance marked a new chapter in the industry's commitment to biodiversity conservation. In a report titled "Positive Travel and Tourism in Action," a strategic roadmap to combat biodiversity loss was unveiled, aligning with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
For many years, UNWTO has advocated for integrating tourism into the broader UN agenda on biodiversity, strengthening its commitment to the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. A report developed in partnership with ANIMONDIAL showcases over 30 examples worldwide illustrating joint efforts of companies, governments, and civil society to protect nature.
Key tourism leaders, including the president of WTTC and the UNWTO Secretary-General, emphasized the importance of collaboration for a sustainable future and environmental preservation. The CEO of Sustainable Hospitality Alliance highlighted the role of nature conservation and pride in the practical outcomes of collective action.
At its core, the Nature Positive Tourism approach aims to expand sector opportunities with tools and knowledge for protecting and preserving destinations. It emphasizes a "net positive impact on nature" approach, informed by consultations with experts from various sectors, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the World Commission on Protected Areas.
Building upon the foundation laid by the 2022 WTTC report "Positive Travel and Tourism on Nature," this report provides practical frameworks and real-world examples to encourage both suppliers and travelers to embark on journeys that contribute to the conservation of natural treasures. Through such collaborative efforts, the travel and tourism industry reaffirms its role as nature stewards, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.
