A Guide to Almería

Almería is a sunny province located in the southern region of Andalusia in Spain. The area is known for its pristine, pebbled beaches, natural parks and a historical city of the same name.

Blue flag beaches and the sea.

Check out the popular resorts of Mojacar and Roquetas del Mar if you enjoy lying on white sand beaches, with the blue sea shimmering in the distance. Here you will be able to enjoy many water sports, including fishing in one of the nearby natural parks. Do not forget to book your hotel in Almeria to enjoy the many activities in the area, ranging from diving to guided tours around the dunes and the natural reserves.

Head to the Cabo de Gata, one of the most famous places in the region, if you want to enjoy the fresh air and the views. Here you will find the Cabo de Gata Natural Park and several blue flag beaches, known for their clean, fine golden sand. The Playa de los Muertos is located close to the park and is place you must visit. Part of the beach is a naturist beach and the other part is a more ordinary, quiet beach. The beach is known for its turquoise waters and fine, white gravel and pebbles. The Playa de Embarcadero is located inside the natural park. Known for its pebbled beach and consolidated volcanic ash structures, this is the ideal place for a swim.

If you are more into sandy beaches, then the Playa del Monsúl, featured in one of the Indiana Jones films, is the place for you. Check out the coves peppered along the coast, including the Playa de los Genoveses, which has a backdrop of dunes and eucalyptus trees.

Culture and history.

The city of Almería is known for its historical landmarks. Take a walk around the historical city center, filled with churches and mudejar architecture. Walk around the city center and visit the cathedral, which has several fortified walls and towers that were built in order to fend of invaders. Visit the nearby La Alcazaba, an ancient military compound and Royal residence located on the San Cristobal Hill overlooking the city and the port, known for its fortifications and gardens. Do not miss the Castillo de Tabernas, one of the city’s most famous monuments.

Nature and sports.

The province of Almería has a large variety of natural parks. If you choose to visit this region, do not miss the natural parks on the coast. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park is a biosphere reserve that is known for its views, with short, craggy cliffs overlooking the blue sea. Choose your ideal beach accommodation, which ranges from apartments and hotels to bungalows and campings, near the park. Staying in the area will enable you to explore the corral reefs by the coast while diving and the volcanic rock formations above the sea while hiking.

If you are into rural tourism, then do not miss the Almanzora valley. The Purchena Alcazaba, the ruins of an ancient Arab fortress, are located in this area. Sierra de Gadorra is another natural park designed for those who want to enjoy outdoor activities and views towards the mountains.
