Wizz Air Plants its Flag in Palermo

Wizz Air has opened a new base at Palermo Airport, marking its 39th worldwide. Two Airbus A321neo aircraft will be stationed in Sicily as the airline expands its presence in southern Italy. The move follows the recent announcement of four routes to Warsaw, Bratislava, Belgrade and Sofia, strengthening Palermo’s links with Central and Eastern Europe.

The base launch also brings a significant domestic push. Palermo–Milan Malpensa will operate twice daily, totalling 14 weekly services. Palermo–Bologna will see 11 flights per week, while Palermo–Venice will run 10 times weekly. Completing the domestic network is Palermo–Turin, scheduled daily and launching on 4 May 2026.

International growth continues later in the summer. A new Palermo–Tel Aviv service will begin on 1 August 2026, operating three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. From 2 August 2026, flights to Sharm el-Sheikh will run four times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, adding Red Sea leisure options to the Sicilian network.

The expanded schedule opens up both city and seaside opportunities. Milan and Bologna provide access to northern Italy’s business centres and historic streets, while Venice and Turin offer architecture, museums and Alpine backdrops. Tel Aviv combines Mediterranean beaches with nightlife and cultural sites, and Sharm el-Sheikh draws visitors seeking diving spots and year-round sun.

With two aircraft now based in Palermo and a broader route network in place, the airport adds more direct services across Italy and beyond. Higher frequencies on domestic routes mean fewer journeys that require a change in Rome or elsewhere. Once the extra flights start, departure boards in Palermo will show more non-stop options and regular weekly services. That gives people in Sicily more fixed departure days to plan around when arranging travel in 2026.
