TSA Officers Thwart Loaded Gun Incident at Roanoke Airport

On Thursday, April 18, vigilant Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport averted a potential security breach when they intercepted a loaded gun from a passenger at the security checkpoint. The incident involved a man from Blue Ridge, Va., who inadvertently attempted to carry the weapon through airport security.

The loaded 9mm handgun, equipped with 15 bullets including one in the chamber, was discovered as the man’s carry-on bag passed through the X-ray machine. The alert prompted a closer inspection by TSA personnel, leading to the weapon's confiscation by the police. TSA regulations stipulate that it is law enforcement that confiscates firearms, not TSA agents.

This event could lead to severe repercussions for the passenger, including a stiff financial civil penalty which can escalate up to $15,000 depending on the specific circumstances of the violation.

Robin "Chuck" Burke, the TSA’s federal security director for the airport, commented on the incident, emphasizing the severe risks introduced by such actions. "Bringing a loaded gun with a bullet in the chamber to an airport security checkpoint introduces an unnecessary security risk to our officers and to fellow travelers," Burke stated. He noted the man possessed a firearm permit, which should have informed a better understanding of appropriate firearm security for air travel.

In the previous year, TSA officers at this airport have intercepted five firearms at security checkpoints. This recent interception marks the second instance in 2024. TSA continues to enforce strict guidelines for traveling with firearms, which are allowed only in checked baggage under properly declared and secured conditions.
