New Seasonal Route Connects Middle East and the Balearic Islands
Etihad Airways has confirmed that it will introduce a seasonal service connecting Abu Dhabi with Palma de Mallorca in the summer of 2026. The flights are scheduled to begin on 12 June and will continue until mid-September. With three rotations per week, the connection becomes the first nonstop air service between Asia and the Balearic Islands. The announcement expands the airline’s European operations and reflects increasing demand for routes linking the Middle East with southern Europe.
According to the airline, the new route will be operated with Airbus A321LR aircraft. Services are planned three times per week throughout the summer season. The use of this aircraft type allows for longer-range single-aisle operations while maintaining efficiency, making it possible to connect Abu Dhabi directly with Palma de Mallorca. Ticket sales for the seasonal flights are already available through the airline’s official booking channels.
Direct connections provide passengers with more affordable travel to Mallorca, the largest of Spain's Balearic Islands. Palma, the capital of the island, is home to prominent sites such as La Seu Cathedral and the historic old town, which attract tourists throughout the year. Mallorca features a variety of landscapes, from sun-soaked beaches and charming coastal towns to the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, recognized by UNESCO for its cultural and natural value. As a result, this route enables travelers to more easily visit the western Mediterranean’s cultural sites and picturesque landscapes.
In addition to Mallorca itself, the new service creates easier connections to neighboring Balearic destinations. Ibiza, accessible from Mallorca by ferry, has built a thriving tourism sector focused on its beaches and vibrant nightlife. Menorca is also nearby and is characterized by a quieter atmosphere, archaeological sites, and preserved natural landscapes. Travelers can reach the wider Balearic Islands more conveniently by flying directly from Abu Dhabi, avoiding the need for multiple layovers or connections.
This development underscores the increasing significance of southern European destinations within global aviation networks. For Etihad, this development emphasizes the airline's strategy to operate seasonal leisure flights aligned with peak travel demand.
