New Hotel Opens in Tromsø Near Harbour as Travel Grows
On 25 June, a new hotel began operating in central Tromsø, increasing the city’s capacity for overnight stays. The Dock 69°39 by Scandic opened with 305 rooms across twelve floors, becoming one of the city’s largest single properties. Located in the Vervet district near the harbourfront, the hotel nearly doubles Scandic’s room presence in Tromsø and aligns with ongoing developments in the region’s travel infrastructure.
This is the third hotel managed by Scandic in the city, raising its total local capacity to nearly 700 rooms. The building was planned with Tromsø’s rough winters in mind, including floors tough enough to handle snow-covered boots and sharp gear. A rooftop track with integrated heating offers an outdoor exercise space. Construction met environmental certification standards, including Nordic Swan and BREEAM, which apply across Northern European building projects.
Just a short walk from the hotel, travellers can reach Stortorget, Tromsø’s central square, often used for open-air events and seasonal markets. From there, it is easy to continue along Søndre Tollbodgate, where preserved examples of former port buildings remain in use. These locations are publicly accessible and require no transportation to visit from the hotel area.
North of Vervet, visitors can access Strandpromenaden, a shoreline walkway with views over the Tromsøysundet strait. Walk a few minutes west and you’ll find Vervetstranda, a quiet little bay where people often stop to sit, relax, or just watch the water when the weather’s good. Both locations are within walking distance and serve as non-commercial outdoor spaces frequently used by residents and tourists.
With over 300 new rooms, The Dock 69°39 gives Tromsø’s centre a noticeable boost just in time for the busy seasons, like when people come to see the northern lights or enjoy the endless summer sun. Its location reduces reliance on accommodation in surrounding districts or outlying guesthouses. The opening marks an increase in central lodging options for short-term visitors staying within walking range of key parts of the city.
