Recently, Happy Face Hill, located on the border of Los Angeles and Ventura counties near the Kuehner Drive exit, was adorned with unusual colors. About 9,000 small flags in yellow, blue, and white were placed on it.

This unique sight can be observed when traveling west on the 118 Freeway near the Kuehner Dr. exit, as reported by Los Angeles Daily News.

The iconic smiley face, originally created in 1998 by Northridge gardener Sonny Klamerus, was recently adorned with numerous tiny bright blue and yellow flags. Klamerus crafted the giant face into the hillside using a weed whacker, shovel, and herbicides.

Over the years, the giant face has undergone changes, and its latest "facelift" has brought a truly joyful transformation. Thirty volunteers, including scouts and community members, dedicated six hours to placing 9,000 flags on the steep, angled hillside.

The outcome is a vibrant yellow face outlined in white, with cheerful blue slits for eyes and a playful blue smile.

About a decade ago, the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise took the initiative to revitalize the aging Happy Face Hill landmark, which is situated on a slope belonging to an association of nearby townhouses and was previously maintained by the neighboring Jewish cemetery. The Rotary Club obtained permission from the homeowners' association to oversee Happy Face Hill.

According to the participants of this spontaneous endeavor, the objective was to create a slope that would offer a delightful and visually appealing view for everyone descending it. Henceforth, the smiling face will welcome attendees at the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce event from March 22 to 24.

Visitors to the Rotary Club's annual Happy Face music festival, which took place this year on Memorial Day weekend in May, will notice a sort of makeover.

"People love it. It just brings a smile to their faces. We are very proud to support it. And we feel energized when we work on the hill," added the activists who spearheaded the transformation.
