Walserweg Gottardo, a new 210-kilometer hiking trail, has recently opened, offering a unique journey through Switzerland and Italy. The trail traces the historical routes of the Walser people, who migrated from the canton of Valais over the Alps between the 12th and 14th centuries, establishing settlements in the High Alps.

The trail not only showcases breathtaking alpine landscapes but also aims to preserve the unique cultural heritage of the Walser community. By attracting tourists to these remote regions, the route helps create economic opportunities that encourage the younger generation to remain in their native villages, thereby preserving the Walser traditions.

This initiative is a significant step towards sustainable tourism, blending the preservation of natural beauty with the safeguarding of cultural history. The Walserweg Gottardo offers a rare opportunity to explore both the scenic beauty of the Alps and the enduring legacy of the Walser people.

Similar trails can be found in many Alpine regions, such as the Via Alpina. This network of trails spans five countries and covers over 5,000 kilometers, offering hikers not only the chance to enjoy nature but also to explore the cultural diversity of various Alpine regions. One of the most popular routes is the Red Trail, which crosses eight Alpine regions and introduces hikers to a variety of landscapes, from glaciers to dense forests.

Another well-known trail is the Tour du Mont Blanc, which spans 170 kilometers and crosses France, Italy, and Switzerland. This trail, encircling Europe’s highest peak, Mont Blanc, is a favorite among adventurers seeking to experience the spirit of the Alps. The Tour du Mont Blanc offers stunning mountain views, charming Alpine villages, and a rich cultural experience.
