Italy’s air travel system is likely to face disruption on Sunday, 16 February, after the CUB Trasporti union confirmed a 24-hour national strike. The walkout will involve staff across airlines, airports and associated ground services, and is set to run throughout the day, from midnight until 23:59. Delays and cancellations are expected at airports across the country.

The strike includes staff across ground handling, check-in and technical functions linked to daily flight operations. Services are not expected to stop completely, but fewer staff on duty are likely to slow down airport procedures. The extent of disruption will differ by airport and airline, based on local planning and the measures put in place.

Airlines flying to and from Italy have started informing customers of potential schedule changes. Flight updates are being provided by carriers, while passengers who booked via agencies or tour operators are being directed to their booking provider. Options may vary depending on ticket conditions. Travellers are advised to check updates close to departure, as changes may be confirmed at short notice.

Travel plans outside Italy may be easier to manage for those able to adjust. Neighbouring countries including France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia are not affected, leaving rail or road connections as realistic alternatives. Flexible itineraries could also make it possible to shift departures to nearby hubs or move city breaks to later in the week, when demand may ease in cities such as Rome, Milan and Venice.

Industrial action can disrupt travel with little notice, even at quieter times of the year. Flight schedules may change during the day, airport processes may take longer, and connections could be affected. Anyone travelling through Italy on 16 February should allow extra time, check flight status regularly and be ready for delays rather than expecting services to run normally.
