Lufthansa City Airlines has opened a new operating base at Frankfurt Airport, marking the airline’s second hub after Munich. Flight operations began on 9 February 2026, connecting Frankfurt with Manchester as the first route. Services to Berlin and Valencia follow later in February, with Düsseldorf and Málaga added in March as the local network starts to take shape.

The Frankfurt launch is part of a wider short-haul expansion within the Lufthansa Group. The first service was operated by an Airbus A320neo, reflecting the airline’s focus on newer, fuel-efficient aircraft. Additional destinations are scheduled for summer, as Lufthansa City Airlines gradually builds a broader European presence from the Group’s largest hub.

Fleet growth is a key part of the Frankfurt base plan. By autumn 2026, seven A320neo aircraft are due to be based there, allowing the airline to add more flights and destinations. Hiring is continuing in parallel, with around 60 staff already taken on in Frankfurt and additional cockpit and cabin crew recruitment scheduled as operations expand across European routes.

The growing network opens up easier access to a mix of business and leisure cities. Manchester strengthens links with the UK, while Valencia and Málaga add reliable options for Spain’s east coast and Andalusia. Berlin and Düsseldorf improve domestic and regional connectivity, and planned summer additions such as Stockholm, Helsinki and Ibiza broaden the range of city breaks, beach trips and northern European gateways reachable via Frankfurt.

The new base underlines how Frankfurt is being positioned as a stronger short-haul gateway alongside its long-haul role. A denser European network supports quicker connections, more choice across travel seasons and greater schedule flexibility. As Lufthansa City Airlines expands, Frankfurt’s role as a transfer point for both work and leisure travel looks set to grow, particularly for passengers relying on frequent, well-timed European services.
