Travellers heading to Portugal in August and early September are being warned of delays and flight schedule changes due to strike action by ground handling staff. The walkouts will take place at Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira, Porto Santo and several airports in the Azores. They are planned for consecutive long weekends until 1 September, affecting operations during the busiest period of the year for tourism and air travel.

Employees of SPdH and Menzies Aviation, responsible for baggage handling, aircraft servicing and check in assistance, are taking part in the strikes. They cite low wages, unpaid night shifts, inadequate parking and unresolved workplace issues that arose after Groundforce was taken over by Menzies and SIMA. The resulting stoppages have reduced staffing in vital airport operations, making delays more likely during the strike days.

Official strike dates are as follows:

  • 8–11 August
  • 15–18 August
  • 22–25 August
  • 29 August–1 September

These strikes are expected to affect up to 60 flights per week between the United Kingdom and Portugal’s main airports. The list of affected routes includes connections between UK airports and Lisbon, Porto, Faro, as well as flights to Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azores.

During strike days, travellers can expect longer queues at check in, slower baggage return and possible changes to flight times. Arriving at the airport ahead of time, bringing only the basics and staying tuned to airline updates can help travellers sidestep potential hassles. Understanding EU Regulation 261/2004 can assist when claiming a refund, arranging an alternative flight or seeking compensation for delays. Having travel insurance that includes cover for cancellations and delays can give travellers extra confidence and support if they need to change their plans.

People heading to or from Portugal in August are advised to plan ahead. Those going to the coast, historic cities or islands might see flight times change and should keep that in mind when arranging their trips. Following airline updates, getting to the airport early and keeping travel plans flexible can make it easier to handle strike disruptions and avoid added stress during the busy holiday period.
