Edinburgh Airport Drop-Off Fees Rise Again
Edinburgh Airport will increase its terminal pick-up and drop-off charge by £2.50, taking the fee to £8.50 from 18 May. The airport says the change is needed after a sharp rise in business rates added £8 million to its costs. The charge applies to the paid zone close to the terminal, used by drivers making short stops.
The airport said its business rates have risen by 142%, the largest cost increase faced by any UK airport. It also said the rise is far higher than at comparable Scottish airports, with Glasgow up 51.5% and Prestwick up 39.1%. As part of the same change, the 50% discount previously offered to electric vehicles will be removed.
What Stays Free
The airport will keep its free pick-up and drop-off area, where drivers can stop for up to 30 minutes. More spaces will be added there, and a free bus service between that area and the terminal will resume. Airport chief executive Gordon Dewar said the fee rise was not planned, but the rates bill could not be absorbed.
The change will make the free zone more useful for people trying to keep airport costs down, especially families, students and anyone heading off on a budget trip. Edinburgh remains a key gateway for city breaks, Highlands routes and international flights, but passengers may now want to build in extra time if using the free area and shuttle bus.
“A 142% increase reduces our ability to invest, grow and compete. In practical terms, it equates to funding around 200 jobs, two aircraft stands, or five new security lanes. It is not a cost that can be absorbed; it must be covered, and trade-offs like this are unfortunately unavoidable."
This is not the kind of travel update anyone frames for the fridge. Still, it is practical: a quick terminal drop-off will cost more, while the slower free option stays available. Anyone flying from Edinburgh after 18 May should check where they are being dropped off, agree the plan before reaching the airport, and avoid paying £8.50 for pure confusion.
