Cruise vacations are typically linked with relaxation and peace of mind, but recent developments have shown that safety might be compromised even aboard high-end ships. A U.S. resident, with ties to Hawaii, has filed a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean after finding a hidden camera in the bathroom of her cabin. This incident has sparked concerns not only about privacy on cruises but also about the possible threats travelers may encounter.

Violation of Privacy Onboard

Сrew member Arvin Joseph Mirasol unlawfully installed surveillance equipment in passenger cabins, violating their right to privacy. The woman, who asked to stay anonymous, shared that she found the device by accident while using the bathroom and noticed it hidden underneath the sink. Later investigations showed that Mirasol had placed cameras in various cabins, recording both adults and children in compromising situations.

This occurrence has caused a widespread outcry, as cruise ships are generally viewed as secure environments. Royal Caribbean has made a public statement affirming that the protection and security of passengers are their highest priorities, and they immediately informed the authorities and terminated the worker involved. However, the full extent of how many individuals were impacted by Mirasol’s actions remains to be determined.

What's Next?

The legal proceedings are still underway, and it is not yet clear how much time will be needed to bring the investigation to a conclusion. Mirasol has admitted to his offenses and has been given a 30-year sentence in a federal prison, but his actions have severely damaged the cruise industry’s reputation. People are now questioning what further actions can be taken to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
