Cyprus has reported a rise in travel to parts of the Middle East covered by official advisories, as regional tensions continue to affect movement and safety conditions. Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos stated that citizens choosing to travel to these destinations do so at their own responsibility. Authorities stressed that no future repatriation operations will be organised for those who may become stranded in affected areas.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has updated its travel guidance and recommends avoiding all travel to several countries in the region. Officials highlighted the challenges faced during earlier evacuation efforts, when around 1,000 civilians were returned to Cyprus, mostly from the United Arab Emirates, after conflict disrupted flights and local conditions.

Countries included in the travel advisory

  • United Arab Emirates
  • Iraq
  • Israel
  • Qatar
  • Kuwait
  • Lebanon
  • Bahrain
  • Saudi Arabia

The advisory comes ahead of the Orthodox Easter holiday period, when international travel typically increases. Authorities noted growing interest in trips despite ongoing tensions. Officials emphasised that decisions to travel outside recommended guidance should be carefully considered, as government support options may be limited if conditions change suddenly.

Travel plans in the region may change, especially on routes between Europe and the Middle East. Some people may decide to choose Mediterranean destinations where travel conditions are currently more stable. Data shows that cancellations of short-term rentals in Cyprus increased after the conflict began, indicating that some people are reconsidering their travel plans and choosing different destinations or travel dates.

The warning shows that changes in the Middle East are already influencing travel in nearby countries. Flight schedules, reservations and departure dates may change when the situation is unclear. People planning trips in this region may need to check official travel advice before departure and consider flexible tickets or alternative destinations if the situation changes.
