English wine is experiencing a renaissance, rapidly becoming one of Europe's most intriguing viticultural hotspots. Thanks to a warming climate, innovative winemaking techniques, and a growing recognition of England's grape-growing potential, 2024 is poised to be a standout year for enthusiasts of English viticulture. From sparkling vintages to immersive vineyard experiences, here’s how you can explore the flourishing world of English wine this year.

Vineyard Ventures in Somerset

In the picturesque settings of Somerset, Minerva Wines, established in 2015 by Emma Rice, is a testament to the English wine revolution. Inspired by the storied wine region of Burgundy, Rice's venture at Corston Fields Farm, a stone's throw from the historic city of Bath, invites wine lovers to partake in unique vineyard experiences. This April, the vineyard is introducing supper clubs, vine-side tastings, and grape-picking excursions, along with the option to stay overnight in charming shepherd’s huts overlooking the vine rows.

Norwich Wine Week: A Celebration in Norfolk

Norwich Wine Week, commencing on June 14, is set to spotlight Norfolk's ascending wine scene, traditionally known for its beer and brewing heritage. This festival will bring together notable local vineyards like Flint, Burn Valley, and Chet Valley, blending Norfolk's culinary and musical talents with its winemaking prowess. The historic city of Norwich will play host to a vibrant array of events, including expert talks and tastings set against the backdrop of award-winning dining venues and iconic buildings.

Domaine Evremond: A Sparkling New Chapter

Marking a groundbreaking collaboration in the English wine scene, the Taittinger family, famed for their Champagne, has ventured into English soil with Domaine Evremond in Kent. Planted with classic Champagne varietals, this venture signifies the first UK vineyard initiated by a Grande Marque Champagne house. Wine aficionados can look forward to sampling Domaine Evremond's inaugural English sparkling wine this September, following three years of meticulous ageing. Moreover, plans for a winery and visitor center, offering panoramic views of the estate, are on the horizon for late 2024.

English wine is not just surviving but thriving, with these new ventures and festivals offering a glimpse into the country's vinicultural prowess. Whether it's the serene vineyards of Somerset, the historic streets of Norwich, or the sun-kissed slopes of Kent, England's wine landscape invites exploration and enjoyment. So, before you consider jetting off to the established wine regions of France or Italy, consider the burgeoning wine destinations closer to home, where English viticulture is waiting to surprise and delight you.
