Zurich Airport to Enhance Safety with $283 Million Runway Extensions

Zurich Airport (ZRH) is poised for a significant safety upgrade, having announced plans to extend two of its three runways, following a favorable vote from local residents. This ambitious project, involving Runway 28 and Runway 32, comes with a hefty investment of over $283 million and is set to unfold over the next decade.

In a strategic move underscored by safety rather than capacity expansion, ZRH aims to embark on the construction phase by 2030. This decision follows the green light from the local electorate, marking a critical milestone in a lengthy approval process that requires federal endorsement.

Lukas Brosi, CEO of Zurich Airport's managing company, expressed gratitude towards the Zurich electorate for endorsing this crucial safety enhancement. The initiative is designed to solidify public trust and ensure the airport's future stability and safety. The project envisages the extension of Runway 32 by 280 meters and Runway 28 by 400 meters, accompanied by additional taxiways to bolster the latter's functionality.
