World's Longest Circular Hiking Trail to Open in Portugal

Portugal is set to unveil Palmilhar Portugal, a new 3,000 km-long hiking trail in July, aimed at attracting hiking enthusiasts and linking 100 of the country's must-see sites. This ambitious project promises to offer a unique way to explore Portugal’s diverse landscapes and cultural landmarks.

Palmilhar Portugal will traverse major cities like Lisbon and picturesque regions such as the Algarve. This trail will also provide hikers with opportunities to visit several UNESCO World Heritage sites, making it more than just a typical hiking route.

Portugal, known for its beautiful beaches and sunny trails, often faces challenges with mass tourism. To address this, Ricardo Bernades, an avid hiker, devised Palmilhar Portugal. The goal is to divert tourists from overcrowded areas to lesser-known yet equally stunning locations. This expansive trail aims to become the world's largest circular hiking route, showcasing Portugal’s hidden gems.

The first section of the trail is set to open in July in the town of Alenquer, north of Lisbon. Subsequent sections will include a route along the Alentejo coast in the south and a mountain segment in Trás-os-Montes in the north. Ultimately, the project will feature 15 distinct routes, each offering unique experiences, and is expected to be fully completed in three years.

The entire trail will be accessible to both hikers and cyclists, with dedicated lanes throughout. To ensure inclusivity, certain parts of the route will be adapted for people with reduced mobility. Additionally, an application will be launched to keep users updated on the trail's progress. This app will also facilitate the booking of accommodations, meals, and tickets for nearby sporting and cultural events.
