"With heavy hearts, we leave the sky": Canadian airline Lynx Air has ceased operations
Calgary-based Lynx Air has informed its passengers that it is suspending operations. All previous bookings are canceled, and passengers are encouraged to seek refunds from credit card companies.
The low-cost airline was a rebranding of the airline called Enerjet, which was established in 2006. Its first scheduled flights under the name Lynx Air began in April 2022 with Boeing 737 Max aircraft serving destinations in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. This is reported by news.yahoo.com.
In its final statement, the airline said: "With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to the skies. We hope that in our absence, our vision to inspire more Canadians to fly will leave its mark on passengers. Over the past two years, a tremendous amount of work has gone into Lynx Air's growth and expansion, offering Canadians affordable and seamless travel. However, the complex financial pressures associated with inflation, fuel costs, exchange rates, cost of capital, regulatory costs, and competitive intensity in the Canadian market ultimately proved to be too steep a hill for our organization to climb."
Competition in Canadian aviation is intense, with two major airlines: the long-standing Air Canada and WestJet, founded in Calgary 30 years ago.
Lynx Air's investors included Indigo Partners, a private equity fund that also has interests in Wizz Air, as well as Frontier Airlines from the United States and Volaris from Mexico.
Canada's Transportation Minister Pablo Rodriguez posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that reads: "My thoughts are with the Canadian travelers and workers who will be affected by this news, their families, and communities across Canada who will feel the impact. For all travelers who had a return flight booked with Lynx, I expect Lynx to help you get home as soon as possible. I believe that Lynx will fully reimburse you if your fare is not honored."
Lynx Air's statement on its closure has concluded: "Our passengers have been a big part of the purpose and drive to build the airline. It has been a great privilege to offer low fares to inspire Canadians to fly more and spend more time with loved ones in their favorite places. Thank you for your support in our journey; we are as frustrated as you are. We are grateful for the loyalty of our passengers who have appreciated our ultra-low-cost carrier model. We know this is a shock to many, and our goal is to make the winding down of our operations as seamless as possible. It has been an honor to serve you."
