Vienna Gets a Direct Cluj Link
AnimaWings will add a new direct service between Vienna and Cluj-Napoca on 17 July 2026, bringing the Romanian carrier into Vienna Airport’s network. The route will run twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, using an Airbus A220-300. Vienna Airport said the connection adds more choice to its summer timetable and strengthens links with Eastern Europe.
The new service connects Austria with one of Romania’s busiest regional centres. Cluj-Napoca is often linked with technology, universities and a growing creative scene, while its old town, cafés, restaurants and festivals give it a strong short-break appeal. AnimaWings said the route should interest both business and leisure travellers moving between Romania and Austria.
Flights are scheduled early in the day, with departures out of Cluj in the morning and return services leaving Vienna at 8.00am. The Vienna flight is due to land in Cluj at 10.20am, giving visitors most of the day after arrival. The aircraft type also points to a modern short-haul service rather than a small regional hop.
The route should make Transylvania easier to visit without a complicated connection. Cluj’s historic centre, student atmosphere and nightlife work well for a weekend trip, while the surrounding region opens up medieval towns, Carpathian scenery and Dracula-linked folklore. Salina Turda, a former salt mine about 30 kilometres away, is another strong reason to add an extra day.
This is the kind of route that suits travellers who want something beyond the usual city-break map. Vienna already works as a major European gateway, and Cluj adds a practical door into northern Romania. Two weekly flights will not flood the market, but they make the trip easier, cleaner and less dependent on awkward transfers. Small route, useful result.
