United Airlines Introduces MileagePlus Miles Pooling: Travel Together Made Easier
United Airlines has unveiled a groundbreaking feature for its MileagePlus loyalty program members: the ability to pool miles with family and friends for award travel. This first-of-its-kind initiative among major U.S. airlines aims to simplify the way groups share travel costs, just in time for the summer vacation season.
The new miles pooling option allows up to five MileagePlus members to combine their miles into one shared account, accessible via United.com, you can join the program for free here. This innovative feature is designed to benefit anyone in the program, from families with children eager to explore the world to groups of friends planning their next adventure together. Luc Bondar, MileagePlus Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the move as a step toward enhancing travel flexibility and affordability, making it easier for members to connect with the people and places that matter most.
United's introduction of miles pooling comes in response to a growing demand for more cost-effective travel solutions. A 2023 survey by the Family Travel Association found that 81% of parents are planning trips with their kids, despite nearly 60% expressing concerns over travel costs. With no age limit to participate in MileagePlus or the pooling feature, even the youngest travelers can contribute to a family vacation.
Setting up a miles pool is straightforward: any MileagePlus member over 18 can start a pool for free and invite up to four others to join. There's no cap on how many miles can be pooled, offering significant flexibility for booking flights on United and United Express.
United's MileagePlus program continues to lead with flexible, customer-focused features, making travel more accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved.
