The government of Cyprus will simplify the procedure for acquiring citizenship for foreigners
Last week, the parliament passed a bill that will allow highly qualified specialists to become Cypriot citizens under a simplified procedure. It only needs to be revised and updated.
Politicians hope that this will contribute to economic growth and the development of the technology sector, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the country's global reputation. This is what the Cyprus Mail reports.
Why is it necessary to attract new personnel?
It is noted that the recent influx of foreign companies in the technology sector has led to the fact that Cypriot graduates or Cypriots who have lived abroad for several years are returning to the island for employment.
As this sector is relatively new, the reality is also that there is a shortage of local professionals.
Therefore, several stakeholders have expressed the need to attract and retain highly qualified technology professionals from abroad to support the development of the technology sector.
According to Eurostat, Cyprus has the lowest percentage of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) graduates in the EU, with only 13.8%.
As a result, it is clear that foreign technology professionals can transfer their experience to the local workforce.
Experience from other European countries that have adopted citizenship laws
For instance, Finland recently amended its citizenship legislation, introducing several conditions. Finnish law now mandates continuous residence in the country for 5 years, with the total duration of absence not exceeding 30 months. Additionally, a B1 level of proficiency in the Finnish language is required.
Germany has also recently revised its citizenship legislation, incorporating similar regulations. Individuals legally residing and working in Germany can apply for German citizenship after five years. Applicants with a C1 level of proficiency in the German language can expedite this process and obtain citizenship after only three years.
