Thanks to easyJet and Ryanair, an abandoned airport in the UK may resume operations
10 years after its closure, Manston Airport in Kent is preparing plans to rebuild its runway. Thus, the renewed airport will open its potential for flights of Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air.
It is reported that the facility, which was previously used by the Royal Air Force during the World Wars, is currently undergoing reconstruction. The Mirror reports that the opening of the renovated airport is scheduled for 2025.
It is noted that initially the facility will serve as a cargo airport, and from 2028 it is planned to add passenger transportation to it. Negotiations are currently underway with low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air.
In 2015, the airport was reportedly used as a truck stop in case of temporary problems with the Channel crossing, after it was closed after years of unprofitability. The facility was given the green light for reconstruction last August, although planners recommended rejecting the plans due to environmental damage and increased traffic on local roads.
It is now known that the restoration of this facility will cost about £500 million, which will include the construction of new terminals and runway upgrades. The developer claims that the project will create around 650 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent jobs once fully operational.
