South Korea officially banned eating dog meat
The South Korean parliament has passed a law banning the consumption of dog meat and the breeding of dogs for slaughter.
The ban was initiated by the country's president, Yoon Suk Yeol. Now, according to the law, those who breed dogs for human consumption, buy, transport, store or sell food made from dogs face up to three years in prison and a fine of about $20,000, BBC reports.
At the same time, the bill does not provide for liability directly for eating dog meat.
The ban has sparked heated debate between animal rights activists and traditionalists.
For example, in November 2023, a fight broke out between two hundred dog farmers and police in Seoul. The Association of Dog Meat Producers threatened to release two million dogs onto the streets of the capital.
