Reykjavik: why the airline TUI named its new Boeing this way
The new aircraft has been put into service by the leading European leisure, travel, and tourism company, TUI. The carrier has named the Boeing 737 MAX 8 "Reykjavik." The aircraft's name is meant to promote TUI's winter seasonal flights to Iceland from the UK and serve as an "ambassador" for the country's capital.
It will operate flights between UK cities and Reykjavik, as stated in a recent press release from the company.
From December 17, 2023, to February 28, 2024, TUI Airways will operate flights from London Gatwick, Manchester, and Bristol to Reykjavik, and has expanded the number of flights. In total, more than 100 flights to and from Iceland are planned by the end of the winter season in 2024. According to experts, by the end of February, the airline will carry more than 115,000 tourists to the island.
The Boeing has already completed its first flight, TUI flight 4308. It departed from London at 7:15 a.m. and arrived in Reykjavik at 10:15 a.m. local time.
The aircraft was warmly welcomed in Reykjavik by Fjordis Loa Fjorhallsson, Deputy Mayor of the city. She expressed her excitement at the ceremony with the following statement:
"It is a great pleasure for me to be the godmother of this Boeing 737-8 TUI, named after our beautiful city, the northernmost capital of the world. Reykjavik continues to inspire and excite travelers from all corners of the globe."
TUI continues to expand its seasonal offerings to Iceland and now provides complete vacation packages. They can vary, and the offers are available on the airline's website.
