Real-Time Baggage Tracking Arrives at Schiphol Airport
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) takes a giant leap in enhancing passenger experience by introducing real-time baggage tracking. Starting April 3, 2024, travelers landing at AMS can now monitor the whereabouts of their luggage through an advanced system accessible via the airport's website, app, and 150 screens across the baggage halls.
This groundbreaking technology employs predictive algorithms, previously utilized in aircraft ground handling, to provide passengers with up-to-the-minute details on their baggage status. Information displayed will indicate whether luggage is still aboard the aircraft, en route to the baggage basement, or already on the carousel, aiming to streamline the baggage collection process.
Sander van Tienhoven, Royal Schiphol Group's Product Owner of Passenger Information, emphasized the initiative's focus on transparency. Feedback from passenger surveys highlighted the importance of timely baggage arrival information, leading to the development of this AI-driven solution. By integrating thirteen different data sources, including the innovative Deep Turnaround model for tracking aircraft on the ground, the system offers precise predictions on baggage delivery times.
The move is part of Schiphol's broader strategy to harness technology in improving airport operations, especially in the wake of the travel industry's recovery post-pandemic. Lennert l’Amie, CIO at Royal Schiphol Group, underlined the airport's commitment to ensuring passengers never again face the disruptions experienced in summer 2022. By encouraging data sharing among airlines, AMS has been able to devise solutions that not only enhance passenger satisfaction but also optimize airport logistics without the need for extensive physical infrastructure changes.
