Rapid increase in refugees in Germany: where they come from the most
The statistics are staggering: in 2023, almost 352 thousand people applied for asylum in Germany. This is one and a half times the number of people in 2022. In return, the government reviewed more than 260 thousand applications.
Such data was published by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).
According to the agency, the number of applicants increased by 51.1%. The largest group is made up of people from Syria - 104.6 thousand people. The Syrians are followed by refugees from Turkey (62.6 thousand), Afghanistan (53.5 thousand), Iraq (12.3 thousand), Iran (10.2 thousand), Georgia (9.3 thousand), and Russia (9 thousand). The agency reviewed 261.6 thousand applications, satisfying more than half of them (51.7%).
Why was Ukraine not mentioned in the list of countries? Because Ukrainians do not have to apply for asylum. The government provides them with temporary protection. As of the end of October 2023, Germany had accepted about 1.17 million Ukrainian refugees, more than any other country in the European Union. Ukrainians who arrived in the country after February 24, 2022, also receive social assistance.
