Passenger throws coins into airplane engine and stops China Southern Airlines plane from taking off
On March 6, 2024, a China Southern Airlines flight from Sanya to Beijing was delayed for 4 hours because of a passenger. The tourist threw coins into the plane's engine, which necessitated additional technical inspection.
A video distributed by Chinese state media shows a flight attendant interrogating the passenger. He admitted to throwing "three to five" coins, CNN reports.
After the incident, airport police detained the offender. China Southern Airlines confirmed that the coins were found during the inspection, but did not specify their number.
Representatives of the airline assured that after a thorough inspection of the aircraft, no security problems were found.
China Southern Airlines condemned the tourist's "uncivilized behavior," emphasizing that throwing coins at the plane poses a threat to aviation safety and can lead to serious penalties.
Unfortunately, this is not the first such case. In 2023, there were already incidents in China when passengers threw coins into airplanes, apparently for "good luck."
As TravelWise previously reported, China Southern Airlines intends to launch direct flights between Guangzhou, China, and Doha, Qatar.
